The construction projects now in progress in and around Buffalo’s historic waterfront are being done the right way according to David Colligan.  And he should know.

Colligan, an attorney who resides in North Buffalo, has been active in waterfront and related development for close to twenty years. During that time he has collaborated with a network of political, community, and business leaders who he believes are poised to turn the waterfront into a civic symbol as potent as a sports franchise – with an economic boost to match.

Colligan currently serves on the board of the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation (ECHDC).  Founded in 1999, the ECHDC is responsible for waterfront infrastructure projects along the inner harbor (Buffalo River) and the outer harbor (Lake Erie).  Completed projects include the Buffalo and Erie County Naval and Military Park, the Commercial Slip and the Central Wharf.  In addition, the Canalside project, adjacent to the Erie Canal Harbor site, is well underway.  It covers approximately 20 acres which are being developed for entertainment, hotel, office, retail, residential, restaurant, and other uses.

David sits down with Buddy Shula to discuss the launch of Colligan Law LLP and the firm’s vision. Colligan Law’s vision is that the Western New York community has an innovative community developing in the business world, and the firm is structuring its legal services to support and provide services to the growing businesses in the area.

David discusses the growth stages of a business from forming an entity to the owner’s exit. He discusses how his firm Colligan Law has practice areas that can service the entrepreneurs in the Buffalo and Western New York Area.

Who are the entrepreneurs in Western New York? They are people who have created a successful business and are trying to enjoy a lifestyle that will allow them to enjoy both the business and personal side of being successful. Colligan Law has practice areas, in addition to business law, like aviation, timber and forestry law and oil and gas law to help successful entrepreneurs and business people manage their personal assets such as private aircraft, land in the country with timber and oil and gas rights. These are additional assets owned by entrepreneur that they have accumulated over time. These are the types of assets that Colligan Law helps entrepreneurs manage while still handling their complex legal matter.

Colligan Law’s slogan is Advocates for Business and Community. The partners of Colligan Law came together on one common basis. All of them are heavily involved in the community. David and his partners are involved with the Olmsted Parks, the Boy Scouts, Habitat for Humanity and groups that work with individuals with special needs.

Your firm opened July 1. Why now?

There is a lot that goes into a long-term decision like this and, I will say, the landscape in Buffalo has evolved. It’s now no longer possible to service what I call the “old Buffalo industry,” So I think the time was right to do what we are doing.

As the new kid on the block — in terms of the firm, not its lawyers — what sets you apart from other Western New York firms?

There are two parts of a successful business: There is the business side that is pretty comparable when it comes to business regulation and helping companies in terms of corporate issues, and every firm out there is trying to do that. What we are doing that is different than that is this: We have discovered that Buffalo doesn’t have a lot of Fortune 500 companies owning the businesses in this region; we have a lot of entrepreneurs. So we are gearing our representation to the individual entrepreneur, and we think because of our diversity we can service them in ways that other firms can’t.

Our newly established firm is prepared — both professionally and personally — to address specific business and lifestyle needs.”
