The 13th annual Music is Art festival is fast approaching – and on Saturday, September 12th, special guests the Goo Goo Dolls will play at the free, all day event in Delaware Park.
Erin Gormley, associate attorney at Colligan Law and board member of Music is Art, asked Goo Goo Dolls star Robby Takac about the formation of Music is Art (MiA), and thirteen years of garnering support giving communities access to music:
What is the best business advice you have for someone starting out in the non-profit industry?
Do it because you really, truly believe in it, and then keep accurate records.
What drove you to start the Music is Art Foundation? What were some of the biggest growing pains early on?
Music had always been a big part of my life, once I gained some resources and notoriety, helping spread that idea through MiA programming and events just seemed like a natural thing to do. We had no idea what it took to be a legitimate not-for-profit when we began in 2001, so we had a lot of catching up to do early on, but with the help of committed and talented people over the past decade our organization has grown into a legitimate, well rounded collective.
What drives you to continue to improve and grow Music is Art, and how do you go about doing that?
We want to continue to see support for the arts and youth programming at the forefront of people’s minds in our community. We have a strong Board of Directors and many committees that meet and discuss moving the organization forward on a regular basis.
If you didn’t become a musician, what field would you be in? Do you think you would be successful?
Hmm… Well, maybe an attorney? But probably not a very successful one.
