David Colligan, partner at Colligan Law LLP, joined more than 75 attorneys from 34 international and 20 domestic jurisdictions around the world for the 2015 Annual General Meeting of Lawyers Associated Worldwide in Shanghai, China. Lawyers Associated Worldwide (LAW) gives Colligan Law clients access to high quality, vetted, mid-market law firms located in jurisdictions across the globe.
Like Partner John Moscati’s trip to the 2015 Americas Regional Meeting of LAW. in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, the conference offering networking opportunities as well as a sightseeing trip to Beijing – which included the Great Wall of China, Forbidden City, and Tiananmen Square. The LAW conference also included substantive presentations:
Alternative Fee Arrangements for Startups
One of the partners from a law firm in Barcelona, the largest law firm in Spain representing investors, entrepreneurs, and venture capitalists in startup ventures explained in detail how their firm sets up alternative fee arrangements to meet the needs of their startup clients. This was a very relevant presentation to our Buffalo law firm as every aspect of the alternative fee arrangements they strike with their clients in Spain can be applied to our clients in Upstate New York. It was the first time Colligan had heard another law firm’s approach to solving the startup client’s needs to control cash expenditures, albeit from a foreign perspective.
Data Protection & Cyber Security: Have You Done Enough?
Digital security issues were presented by a U.S. attorney who has devoted a substantial portion of her practice to cyber-security issues, especially as they relate to healthcare. The presentation was helpful in acquainting the attending lawyers with how important cyber security has become to our clients and how the legal and business world has responded to cyber-security threats.
Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) Agreements
Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) Agreements focused on how the agreement between the United States and European Union will offer our clients a tremendous number of new business opportunities on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. The presentation discussed a lawyer’s role in the facilitation of new agreements made under the TTIP.
The LAW conference continued to provide valuable insight for Colligan Law clients: the value of being able to access competent counsel when looking to expand or do business outside of Western New York; whether the expansion is here in the United States in a different state jurisdiction or anywhere else in the world, the Colligan Law firm has access to quality lawyers to complete the clients’ task.
